The Rosary in Twenty Paintings

Praying the mysteries with the masters of the early Renaissance

by Manuel Zorzi

The rosary asks you to look. This book gives you something to look at.

For each of the twenty mysteries there is one painting by an old master, from 1384 to 1550, printed large and in colour. Facing it, a short contemplation walks you into the scene, a terrace in Nazareth, a garden at night, a tomb at dawn, and shows you where to look: a hand, a face, a detail you would have passed by. It is written to last about one decade, so your mind has somewhere to stay while the beads go through your fingers. The prayers of the decade are printed with every mystery, in English and Latin, so you never have to search for them. If you are just beginning, the book shows you how to pray the rosary step by step, which mysteries belong to which day, and why the same words are said fifty times, and seven saints tell what it meant to them.

For anyone who has ever lost the thread somewhere in the third decade: a book to keep open beside you, for one decade on a busy day, or the whole rosary on a quiet one.

Manuel Zorzi studied philosophy in Munich, where he lives with his wife and children. He prays the rosary every day.

Coming next

A library of saints' lives.

After the rosary book comes a series of lives of the saints, told as stories: with the breaks and the doubts, not as legend. Each volume follows one life from the sources, opens a door into the saint's own writing in a new translation, and carries the art the life inspired.

The first volume is in the writing. We will say here when it is ready, and not before.
