What it is
A rosary is a loop of beads with a cross — five groups of ten, each set off by a single bead, with a short pendant leading in. You hold it, and it holds your place, so your hands can pray while your heart rests on the life of Christ.
The mysteries
Each decade is prayed while you dwell on one mystery — a scene from the life of Jesus and his mother. There are four sets of five: joyful, luminous, sorrowful and glorious, one for each day of the week. Across a week you pray through the whole Gospel.
Step by step
- Make the Sign of the Cross.
- Holding the crucifix, pray the Apostles’ Creed.
- On the first bead, pray the Our Father.
- On each of the next three beads, pray a Hail Mary — for faith, hope and love — then the Glory Be.
- For each of the five decades: announce the mystery, pray the Our Father on the single bead, then a Hail Mary on each of the ten beads while you dwell on the mystery, and close with the Glory Be. Many add the Fatima Prayer.
- After the fifth decade, pray the Hail Holy Queen, and end with the Sign of the Cross.

How long does it take to pray the rosary?
About fifteen to twenty minutes for five decades, prayed unhurried. There is no rush — the slowness is part of it.
Do you have to be Catholic to pray the rosary?
No. Anyone can pray it. It is a meditation on the life of Jesus, led by the words the Gospel gives us; many come to it while they are still finding their way.
Which mysteries are prayed on which day?
The Joyful on Monday and Saturday, the Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, the Glorious on Wednesday and Sunday, and the Luminous on Thursday.
What if I lose count?
It does not matter. The beads hold your place, and prayer is not a performance. If your mind wanders, gently return — that returning is itself the prayer.
Do I need a real rosary?
You can pray on your fingers. But a rosary in your hand keeps the rhythm and, over time, becomes a companion — worn smooth by your own prayer.
