Agnes of Rome

Agnes of Rome was a Christian girl of about twelve or thirteen who was martyred in Rome in the early fourth century for refusing to renounce Christ. Hers is one of the oldest and best-documented cults in the Church — her feast on 21 January is recorded by the year 354 — even though the vivid courtroom scenes come from later poetry. She is the patron saint of young girls and women, betrothed couples, and chastity, and because her name echoes the Latin agnus ("lamb"), lambs are blessed in Rome each year on her feast to provide wool for the pallia of new archbishops.
