Ambrose of Milan

Ambrose of Milan (c. 339–397) was a Roman provincial governor who, in 374, was acclaimed bishop of Milan by popular demand while still an unbaptized catechumen — and was baptized and consecrated within about a week. As bishop he defended Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism, withheld communion from the emperor Theodosius until he did public penance for the massacre at Thessalonica, baptized Augustine, and became the father of Latin hymnody; he is counted among the four original Latin Doctors of the Church.
