Anthony the Great

Antony the Great (c. 251–356) was an Egyptian hermit remembered as the "Father of Monks." Around the age of twenty he heard the Gospel command to sell all he had, gave away his inheritance, and withdrew into the Egyptian desert, where his decades of solitary prayer — recorded by his contemporary Athanasius of Alexandria — turned the hermit's life into a lasting monastic movement.
