Bartholomew the Apostle
Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles, almost certainly the Nathanael of John's Gospel — a plain-spoken man from Cana whose blunt doubt ("Can anything good come out of Nazareth?") turned to worship after a single encounter with Jesus. Scripture records little more than his name in the apostolic lists; early tradition remembered him carrying the Gospel east as a missionary and dying a martyr, famously flayed alive, which made him the patron of tanners, leatherworkers, and bookbinders.
