Benedict of Nursia

Benedict of Nursia (c. 480–547) is regarded as the father of Western monasticism and, since 1964, a patron of Europe. His lasting legacy is the Rule of Saint Benedict, a short, humane book of monastic house rules that ordered daily life around prayer, work, and community with a spirit of moderation, and shaped countless monasteries across Europe. Almost everything else known about his life comes from a single storyteller — Pope Gregory the Great — writing roughly fifty years after his death.
