Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux (c. 1090-1153) was a French Cistercian monk and the founding abbot of Clairvaux, one of the most influential figures of twelfth-century Europe. A mystical writer on the love of God, he was repeatedly drawn out of the cloister to help settle a papal schism, confront the philosopher Peter Abelard, and preach the ill-fated Second Crusade. Canonised in 1174 and named a Doctor of the Church in 1830, he is remembered as the "honey-sweet doctor" (Doctor mellifluus) for the warmth of his writing on prayer and Scripture.
