Blaise

Saint Blaise (Blasius, Blaise of Sebaste) was, by tradition, a physician and bishop of Sebastea in Roman Armenia who was martyred around 316. He is best known as the patron invoked against choking and throat ailments, honored each 3 February with the Blessing of the Throats, in which two crossed candles are held to the neck. Radical honesty: almost nothing about the man is documented — and his throat-healing reputation (first recorded around the 6th century by the physician Aëtius of Amida) is actually older than the famous legend later told to explain it.
