Catherine of Alexandria

Catherine of Alexandria is one of Christianity's most famous — and most historically uncertain — saints, remembered in legend as a brilliant young noblewoman of Alexandria who out-argued fifty pagan philosophers before a Roman emperor and was martyred on a spiked wheel around 305. She is the patron of students, philosophers, teachers and universities and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers; historians cannot confirm she ever existed, and Rome removed her from the universal calendar in 1969 for lack of evidence before restoring her as an optional memorial in 2002.
