Catherine of Siena

Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) was a Dominican lay tertiary and mystic from Siena who lived at home rather than in a convent, yet dictated hundreds of letters and a major spiritual work, The Dialogue, and pressed Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome. She died at thirty-three and was canonized in 1461; in 1970 she became one of the first two women named a Doctor of the Church, and she is a patron saint of Italy and of Europe.
