Clare of Assisi

Clare of Assisi (1193/94–1253) was the first woman to follow Francis of Assisi and the founder of the "Poor Ladies" of San Damiano, later called the Poor Clares. She spent about forty years in radical, self-chosen poverty — defending her sisters' right to own nothing against successive popes — and wrote her own Rule of life, the first monastic rule known to have been composed by a woman, approved just two days before her death.
