Elizabeth of Hungary

Elizabeth of Hungary (1207–1231), also called Elizabeth of Thuringia, was a Hungarian princess and landgravine who, widowed at twenty, gave up her rank, wealth, and crown to join the young Franciscan movement and nurse the sick with her own hands in a hospital she built at Marburg. She died at twenty-four and was canonized less than four years later, and is honored as a patron of charitable works, hospitals, nurses, widows, and the Secular Franciscans. Almost uniquely for a medieval laywoman, her life is documented not by legend alone but by the sworn courtroom testimony of four women who had served her.
