Francis Xavier

Francis Xavier (1506–1552) was a Basque nobleman and Paris scholar who became one of the first seven Jesuits with Ignatius of Loyola and the most far-reaching Catholic missionary of his age, baptising tens of thousands across India, the Spice Islands, and Japan. He died of fever on Shangchuan (Sancian) Island within sight of China, the country he most longed to reach, and in 1927 was named patron of all Catholic missions. He is one of the best-documented saints of his century, leaving 138 surviving letters.
