Francis of Assisi

Francis of Assisi (1181/82–1226) was the son of a wealthy Italian cloth merchant who renounced his inheritance before the Bishop of Assisi for a life of radical poverty and founded the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans). One of the very few saints of his age to leave writings in his own voice, he crossed the battle lines of the Fifth Crusade to meet the Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil (1219), is reported by his earliest biographers to be the first documented bearer of the stigmata (1224), and — nearly blind and gravely ill — composed the Canticle of the Creatures, which made him the patron of ecology and animals.
