Gertrude the Great

Gertrude of Helfta (1256–1301/02), known as Gertrude the Great, was a German Benedictine nun and mystic at the learned convent of Helfta and one of the earliest witnesses to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sent to the monastery school at age five, she spent her whole life within its walls; after a conversion vision at twenty-five she turned from a brilliant Latin scholar into a theologian and wrote the Herald of Divine Love and the Spiritual Exercises. She is the only woman saint the Church has honored with the title "the Great."
