Gregory the Great

Gregory the Great (c. 540–604) was a Roman city prefect who gave away his fortune to become a monk, then was elected pope against his will in 590 amid plague and the collapse of imperial Italy. As pope he fed Rome's poor, negotiated peace with the Lombards, sent Augustine of Canterbury on the mission that converted the Anglo-Saxons, adopted the papal title "servant of the servants of God," and wrote the Pastoral Rule and the Moralia in Job — becoming one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church. Gregorian chant bears his name, though that attribution is later than he is.
