Hedwig of Silesia

Hedwig of Silesia (c. 1174–1243) was a Bavarian noblewoman of the House of Andechs who became Duchess of Silesia and, for a time, High Duchess of Poland. She founded the first women's monastery in Silesia at Trzebnica and directed her wealth toward hospitals, lepers, and the poor, spending her last years among the nuns of the house she had built rather than at court. Canonized by Pope Clement IV in 1267, she is honored as the patron saint of Silesia.
