Helena
Helena (c. 248–330) was a low-born innkeeper's daughter who became the partner of the Roman officer Constantius Chlorus and the mother of the emperor Constantine the Great; set aside for a dynastic marriage, she reappeared decades later as the empress Augusta. Near the age of eighty she made a famous pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where the earliest source documents her founding churches at Bethlehem and on the Mount of Olives and distributing charity in person. Her celebrated discovery of the True Cross, however, is a later legend rather than a contemporary record.
