Ignatius of Loyola
Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Basque soldier whose military career ended when a cannonball shattered his leg at Pamplona in 1521. Converted during his long convalescence, he became a pilgrim, a student, and finally the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), and he wrote the Spiritual Exercises — a manual of retreat, prayer, and discernment that is still widely used today.
