James the Greater

James the Greater (James, son of Zebedee) was a Galilean fisherman, one of the first apostles Jesus called and one of only three admitted to his innermost circle — present at the Transfiguration and the agony in Gethsemane. Around AD 44 he became the first of the Twelve to be martyred, beheaded on the orders of Herod Agrippa I, and is the only apostle whose death the New Testament itself records. In later centuries his name became attached to Spain and to the tomb at Santiago de Compostela, making him the patron of pilgrims and the focus of the Camino — though that connection is medieval tradition rather than documented history.
