John of the Cross

John of the Cross (1542–1591) was a Spanish Carmelite friar, priest and poet who, with Teresa of Ávila, founded the Discalced Carmelite reform. Imprisoned and flogged by his own brethren in Toledo, he turned that darkness into the great works of Christian mysticism — The Dark Night, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Spiritual Canticle, The Living Flame of Love — and was later declared a Doctor of the Church, the "Mystical Doctor."
