John the Baptist

John the Baptist was a first-century Jewish desert prophet who preached repentance and baptized crowds — including Jesus — in the Jordan River, and was executed by the tetrarch Herod Antipas. As the forerunner who prepared the way for Jesus, he is remembered for stepping deliberately into his shadow ("He must increase, but I must decrease"), and he is one of the very few Gospel figures independently confirmed by a non-Christian historian, Flavius Josephus.
