John the Evangelist
Saint John the Evangelist was a first-century Galilean fisherman, son of Zebedee and brother of James, who became one of Jesus' innermost circle of apostles and, in the Fourth Gospel, "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Tradition holds that he alone of the Twelve was not martyred but died of old age at Ephesus near the end of the first century, and the Gospel of John, the three Epistles of John, and Revelation are traditionally attributed to him. He is remembered as the "apostle of love" whose long life narrowed to a single counsel: "Little children, love one another."
