Lawrence of Rome

Saint Lawrence (Laurentius) was a deacon of Rome, one of the seven serving under Pope Sixtus II, martyred on 10 August 258 during the persecution of the emperor Valerian. He is remembered above all for a single act preserved in tradition — ordered to surrender the Church's treasury, he gave its money to the poor and then presented the poor themselves as the Church's true treasures — and came to be honoured, with Peter and Paul, as a patron of the city of Rome.
