Lucy of Syracuse
Saint Lucy of Syracuse (c. 283–304) was a young Christian woman martyred by the sword at Syracuse in Sicily during the persecution under the emperor Diocletian. Her name comes from the Latin lux, "light," and although almost nothing of her life is documented, her cult is among the oldest in the Church — she is named in the Canon of the Mass and honored as patron of the blind and of those with eye diseases. Her feast on 13 December, once near the winter solstice, became a festival of candles from Sicily to Scandinavia.
