Mark the Evangelist

Mark is traditionally remembered as the author of the earliest and shortest of the four Gospels, as the interpreter of the apostle Peter, and as the founder of the Church of Alexandria — though almost none of this is firmly documented, and even his authorship of the Gospel is tradition rather than proven fact. What the New Testament does preserve is an unusually human arc: a young helper who abandoned a mission and caused a rift between Paul and Barnabas, yet was later reconciled and called "useful for ministry." He is the patron saint of Venice, whose emblem is his winged lion.
