Martin of Tours

Martin of Tours (c. 316–397) was a Roman cavalry soldier who became one of the most beloved bishops of late antiquity, remembered above all for cutting his military cloak in two to clothe a freezing beggar at the gate of Amiens. He later laid down his arms with the words "I am the soldier of Christ; it is not lawful for me to fight," and as bishop of Tours he became the first great saint the Western Church honored without a martyr's death — holiness proved by a whole life rather than a final hour. Almost everything known about him comes from Sulpicius Severus, who knew him personally.
