Mary, Mother of God
Mary of Nazareth was a first-century Jewish woman, the mother of Jesus, remembered through only a handful of New Testament passages. Her consent at the Annunciation ("Let it be to me according to your word") opens the Christian story, and her Magnificat — a song of God pulling the mighty from their thrones and lifting the lowly — is one of the boldest prayers in Scripture. The most venerated woman in Christian history, she left no writings of her own and is known almost entirely through the memories of others.
