Matthew the Apostle

Matthew (also called Levi) was a first-century tax collector at Capernaum whom Jesus called from his customs booth with the words "Follow me"; he left everything, became one of the Twelve Apostles, and Christian tradition credits him with the first of the four Gospels. His feast is kept on 21 September in the West, and he is the patron of accountants, bankers, and tax collectors.
