Nicholas of Myra

Nicholas of Myra (c. 270–343) was a Christian bishop of Myra in Roman Lycia (modern southern Turkey); beyond the near-certain fact that he was a fourth-century bishop who died around 343, almost nothing about his life is documented, and he left no writings of his own. His reputation for secret, self-effacing generosity — above all the legend of dowry gold thrown by night through a poor family's window — grew over centuries into the figure of Santa Claus and made him the patron of children, sailors, and merchants.
