Patrick of Ireland

Saint Patrick (c. 385–461) was a Romano-British teenager kidnapped by Irish raiders and held as a slave herdsman for six years, who escaped, became a bishop, and then chose to return to Ireland to convert the very people who had enslaved him. He is the patron saint of Ireland and the Irish diaspora, and — uniquely for so ancient a saint — we can still read his own words in the Confessio and the Letter to Coroticus; the famous snakes and shamrock are later legend, not history.
