Rita of Cascia

Rita of Cascia (c. 1381–1457) was an Umbrian wife, mother, widow, and finally Augustinian nun, venerated across the Catholic world as the patron saint of impossible and desperate causes. Almost nothing about her can be verified from contemporary records — the fullest account of her life was written more than 150 years after her death — yet her story of forgiving her husband's murderers and of a thorn-like wound she is said to have borne for years made her one of the most beloved of the saints. She was beatified in 1626 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900.
