Roch of Montpellier

Roch of Montpellier (Rochus; c. 1295–1327 by tradition) is Europe's great plague saint — a French pilgrim remembered for nursing epidemic victims across Italy, catching the disease himself, and dying unrecognized in a prison cell. Almost nothing about his life can be verified from contemporary documents; his cult came first and the biography was written afterward, so he is honestly known more through legend than history. His feast is 16 August, and he is invoked against plague and epidemics and as patron of the sick and those who care for them.
