Rose of Lima

Rose of Lima (1586–1617) was a Dominican laywoman in colonial Peru who, canonized in 1671, became the first person born in the Americas to be recognized as a saint. Barred from a convent, she lived under religious vows in her own home, supported her impoverished family with embroidery, lace, and garden flowers, kept a hermitage for prayer and a room-turned-infirmary for the sick and poor, and left rare early writings by a colonial woman — poems and two hand-drawn diagrams of the soul's ascent to God.
