Saint Anne
Saint Anne is venerated in Christian tradition as the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. She is never named in the Bible; everything the Church remembers about her — her name, her years of barrenness, and her prayer for a child — comes from second-century apocryphal tradition, above all the Protoevangelium of James (c. A.D. 150), a text closely modelled on the Old Testament story of the barren Hannah. Her feast is kept on 26 July, and she is honoured as patron of mothers, grandmothers, and childless couples.
