Saint Barbara

Barbara (traditionally 3rd–4th century) is one of Christianity's most beloved early martyrs and one of its least documented: her story — a young woman locked in a tower who cut a third window into it for the Holy Trinity and was killed by her own pagan father — is regarded by scholars as legend rather than history, and the Church removed her from the universal Roman calendar in 1969 for that reason. She endures as the patron saint of miners, tunnel builders, artillerymen and of a good death, invoked for centuries by those who face sudden danger in the dark.
