Stephen the First Martyr

Saint Stephen (died c. AD 36) is the Church's protomartyr — its first witness to die for the faith. A Greek-speaking Jew chosen as one of the seven deacons to serve the Jerusalem community's neglected widows, he was stoned to death outside the city after a fearless defense before the Sanhedrin. Everything reliably known about him comes from chapters 6–7 of the Acts of the Apostles; he died praying for his killers, and a young man named Saul who approved his death would later become the apostle Paul.
