Teresa of Avila

Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582) was a Spanish Carmelite nun, monastery reformer, and writer who founded the Discalced Carmelite reform and seventeen convents, and whose plain-spoken books on prayer — above all The Interior Castle and The Book of Her Life — are still read as maps of the inner life. In 1970 she became the first woman declared a Doctor of the Church.
