Thomas More

Thomas More (1478–1535) was Lord Chancellor of England, a leading Renaissance humanist and friend of Erasmus, and the author of Utopia — the book that gave the word to the language. He was beheaded in 1535 after refusing to swear the Oath of Succession recognizing Henry VIII as Supreme Head of the Church in England; canonized in 1935, he was named patron of statesmen and politicians in 2000 and is honored as a martyr of conscience.
