Valentine of Terni

Valentine of Terni was a third-century bishop of Interamna (modern Terni, in Umbria) who, by tradition, was beheaded at Rome around 269–273 and venerated as a martyr buried along the Via Flaminia. Almost nothing about his life is documented — the surviving Passio is a much later legend — and the famous link to romantic love is a medieval invention, first attested only in Geoffrey Chaucer's poetry around 1382, more than a thousand years after his death. The Church removed his universal feast from the calendar in 1969 for lack of reliable facts, while still honoring him as a genuine martyr.
