Veronica
Veronica is the woman who, according to Christian tradition, stepped from the crowd on the road to Calvary and wiped the blood and sweat from the face of Jesus, and was left holding his image on the cloth. She appears in none of the four Gospels and cannot be documented as a historical person — her name most likely derives from a Roman relic called the vera icon ("true image") — yet her single act of compassion is fixed as the Sixth Station of the Cross and made her the patron of photographers, laundresses, linen-weavers, and the dying.
