Vincent de Paul
Vincent de Paul (1581–1660) was a French peasant's son and priest who built the charitable relief of his century into an organised system — founding the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians, or Lazarists) in 1625 and, with Louise de Marillac in 1633, the Daughters of Charity, the first community of women who served the sick in homes and streets rather than behind convent walls. Honoured as the "father of the poor" and patron of works of charity, he taught that prayer and service are one act, and his feast is kept on 27 September.
